A couple from Hove have had the holiday they saved all year for ruined after forgetting to take a picture of their pre flight drinks at the pub inside Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal.
The Social Media Savvy pair had initially remembered to ‘check in’ on Facebook on their arrival at the airport. However a lapse in concentration meant they neglected to take and post the obligatory, but all important, photo of a pint of Stella and a glass of prosecco next to a half eaten portion of Eggs Benedict accompanied by a caption of ‘Holiday mode. On the booze already!!! lol.’
Gemma Douglas and Paul Barnes, who have been dating for two years, only realized their mistake at 35,000 feet in the air on the way to their all inclusive week long break in Crete. Miss Douglas a 24 year old beautician described the moment her mistake became apparent: ‘The announcement came over the tannoy that we could switch on the wifi it was then it hit me, we had been having such a good time we had forgotten to put any photos online. I asked Paul and he hadn’t done anything either, nothing on Facebook, nothing on Twitter not even a poxy Snapchat, I was gutted. It was all I could think about the whole holiday I spent most of the time moping around the hotel, it ruined the whole thing. To make matters worse there was a heatwave at home and all I could see on Facebook was people enjoying themselves in Brighton when it should have been all about my holiday.’
Friends at home who were concerned about Gemma’s lack of social media updates began to message her with things such as ‘u ok hun’ and ‘everything alright babe’ which Gemma said just made it worse, ‘I know they were trying to help but it made it clear everyone had noticed’ she said. The couple tried to make amends by staging some pool side photos with captions such as ‘my office for the day’ and ‘just the 35c today’ but despite making a few of their friends jealous the couple said it just wasn’t the same without that first airport drinks shot.
Tour operator Thomas Cook have since offered Gemma and Paul a £30 voucher as a gesture of good will. Gemma’s mum has also offered them the free use of their Caravan in Devon in order to help the couple get over their disappointment.
